{"id":97,"date":"2019-04-25T13:32:30","date_gmt":"2019-04-25T13:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/youlearnenglish.com\/zyle\/?p=97"},"modified":"2021-03-23T04:57:11","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T04:57:11","slug":"simple-past","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youlearnenglish.com\/en\/verb-tenses\/simple-past.htm","title":{"rendered":"Simple past &#8211; English grammar courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The past tense is a verb tense expressing something that has been completed by now and is usually formed by adding -ed to the verb.<\/p>\n<p>Usually we form the simple past by using <strong>Subject<\/strong> + <strong>Infinitive<\/strong> + <strong>ed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are some irregular cases :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>we add -d to verbs ending with -e like live-&gt;lived.<\/li>\n<li>we double the consonant to some verbs like trap-&gt;trapped.<\/li>\n<li>we add -ied to verbs ending with -y like cry-&gt;cried.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at some examples:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"656\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"216\">First person<\/td>\n<td width=\"440\">Notes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"216\">I cleaned my room<\/td>\n<td width=\"440\">this is the simplest way to use this tense<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"216\">I always cleaned my room<\/td>\n<td width=\"440\">you can use \u201coften\u201d, \u201csometimes\u201d, \u201cnever\u201d, \u201calways\u201d etc., to showcase a constant action you used to do<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"216\">Last week I went to the park<\/td>\n<td width=\"440\">you can specify the time if you want<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"216\">We used to be friends a long time ago<\/td>\n<td width=\"440\">you can use a more general period of time<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can ask questions with the simple past tense by using \u201cdid\u201d instead of \u201cdo\u201d for every pronoun. For example: did he talk? Did she talk? Did I talk? Did they talk?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can add \u201cnot\u201d after \u201cdid\u201d to create a negative sentence. For example: I did not read books.<\/p>\n<p>You can abbreviate \u201cdid not\u201d as \u201cdidn\u2019t\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are some verbs that are conjugated by using <strong>Subject + <em>Past Participle<\/em><\/strong> and we call them Irregular Verbs.
